How to say Scone.

Ahh, that age old question…well it is for us in the afternoon tea business… how to properly pronounce SCONE. Since it’s part of our name here at Silver Scone Teas, I figured I needed to add my two cents to the debate. I pronounce it SCONE as in GONE not SCONE as in CONE. Yes, I know that technically the E on the end makes it a long O sound, but I‘ve just proved that really doesn’t matter by giving two examples of where english never seems to follow it’s own rules. GONE and CONE. Go figure! For more crazy english language rules gone wrong, see @itsBobbyFinn. He is hilarious on Instagram trying to teach us english.

But back to SCONE. Those who rhyme it with gone predominate in Scotland, Northern Ireland and the north of England. Those who rhyme with cone tend to dominate in southern Ireland and the Midlands. The rest of the country is a mixture of the two pronunciations. As a Londoner/Essex girl, I’ll stick with my way and slowly convince the rest of you I’m right! Haha
